Buffer & Media Preparation

MES manages the full weigh and dispense module — recipe-driven material selection, weigh targets, lot assignment, electronic dispensing records and hold/release logic that prevents an unapproved material from entering the process. Every raw material dispensed is captured in the MES batch record against the specific recipe and batch. This is where data integrity is made or lost in buffer and media preparation, and it is an MES function, not a DCS one.

Following dispense, DCS takes over — controlling WFI addition to target volume, agitation speed and duration, temperature hold and pressure management. Transfer out to the process or to hold tanks is managed through DCS valve sequencing and flow control. Every parameter is recorded via the DCS-MES interface and captured in the batch record automatically.

ILD systems dilute a concentrated solution with a diluent inline at the point of use — eliminating large hold tanks and integrating preparation directly into the downstream process step. The concentrated solution may be a buffer concentrate, a caustic solution for CIP, an acid, a base or any other process chemical requiring precise dilution at point of use. The control challenge is the same regardless of what is being diluted: real-time conductivity or pH feedback driving pump ratio control precisely across the full operating flow range. We configure ILD control logic so the dilution ratio is accurate at every operating point — not just at the design flow rate. When ILD control logic is poorly configured it creates out-of-specification solutions mid-process, at the worst possible moment.

Buffer and media hold tank level monitoring, transfer sequencing and scheduling — DCS manages the full tank farm valve logic and flow control; MES coordinates against production demand and maintains hold/release status for every tank. We design tank farm automation so the status of every tank is visible, managed and documented — without a parallel paper-based tracking system.
