Utilities — Clean & Black

Utilities are GMP-critical systems. They are not background infrastructure. When a WFI generation system drifts out of specification, when a cleanroom pressure differential deviates, when a clean steam quality excursion goes undetected — the impact lands directly on the batch, the batch record and the regulatory inspection that follows. Our Process Automation Engineers configure DCS systems for both clean and black utilities with the same rigour as the process equipment — standardised control architecture, proper alarm management and clean integration with the broader facility DCS.

A note on BMS: a Building Management System is the building-level control platform managing non-process infrastructure such as HVAC, lighting, access control and energy management. In a GMP facility the BMS sits alongside but separate from the DCS, managing the building environment rather than the process. Where BMS data needs to interface with the process DCS — for example feeding cleanroom environmental data into a broader facility control picture — we configure that interface as part of the overall automation architecture.

Where we deliver

    WFI Generation and Distribution Loop Control

    DCS controls WFI generation, loop temperature maintenance and distribution flow — with continuous conductivity, TOC and temperature monitoring and automated alarming against validated limits. We configure the loop control logic so any out-of-specification condition is detected and alarmed before it reaches a process use point. The alarm philosophy for WFI is designed so an exceedance triggers the right response immediately — not after the next scheduled sampling event.

    Purified Water Systems

    DCS monitoring of conductivity, TOC and loop temperature with automated alarm management and data capture integrated into the facility DCS architecture. Validated sampling point management — all captured and trended through the process control system.

    Clean Steam Generation

    DCS pressure and quality control for clean steam with superheat monitoring, condensate management and automated recording for SIP cycle evidence. Clean steam quality data integrated with SIP cycle records so every sterilisation has documented evidence of steam quality at the point of use.

    HVAC and Cleanroom Pressure Cascade Control

    DCS management of cleanroom pressure differentials, temperature and humidity — with proper alarm philosophy design so that an airlock pressure loss or a classification exceedance is alarmed with the urgency it warrants rather than buried in a general alarm queue. Where BMS handles HVAC at a building level, we configure the interface between BMS and DCS so critical data is visible within the process control architecture.

    Black Utilities

    Chilled Water, Compressed Gases and Effluent

    Chilled water temperature and flow control feeding process heat exchangers; compressed gas supply monitoring and pressure management; effluent treatment control and interlocking against process drainage — all configured within the DCS framework with integrated alarm management. Black utilities affect process performance directly — a chilled water temperature rise during a bioreactor run is a DCS alarm event, not a facilities maintenance issue.
